ความจริงวิวรรณไม่ได้เรียกเขาว่า “อาเมศ” ตามที่เขาขอร้องหรอก เธอมักจะเรียกเขาว่า “คุณปรเมศ” หรือเลี่ยง  ไ ม่พยายามเ รียกชื่อเ ขาแต่คุณปรุงจิตมารดาเลี้ยงของเธออีกนั่นแหละที่เจ้ากี้เจ้าการให็วิวรรณเรียก

Actually, วิวรรณ never called him  ”อาเมศ”  as he had asked her to.  Usually, she referred to him as ”คุณปรเมศ” or avoided referring to him entirely except when คุณปรุงจิต, her bossy step-mother made her.

Names: 

• วิวรรณ      heroine
• อาเมศ or คุณปรเมศ  abusive step-father
• คุณปรุงจิต         step-mother

There are a few really simple expressions using the word ‘ทัน’ that are useful in a number of situations.

Let’s look at some easy examples first:  If you don’t already know these – you need them in your SRS.

อ่านไม่ทัน this is a really good one – it might mean any of the following depending on the situation -

• Maybe you are trying to keep up with a karaoke song (in Thai I hope!) and parts or all of it are just too fast for you?  อ่านไม่ทัน !
• Or perhaps you are watching a movie in a language you don’t know w/ Thai sub-titles and you can’t catch everything?  อ่านไม่ทัน !
• อาจจะ you need to read a few books/articles/papers/etc for school or work by a certain date and you are worried that you don’t have enough time to read everything… อ่านไม่ทัน !

ฟังไม่ัทัน – Also quite useful - 

• If you are listening to a song and can’t quite process the words fast enough to completely understand it …you can say ฟังไม่ัทัน
• When someone is talking to/around you and they are speaking too fast for you to get the gist of what they are saying…you can tell them ฟังไม่ัทัน
• Or if its too much and you can only catch a word (just want to express your helplessness) you can say ฟังทันคำเดียว I only caught 1 word

ไปไม่ทัน

• Your friend invites you to see a movie at เมเจอร์ ซีนีเพล็กซ์ at a certain showtime and you are afraid you can’t make it there in time ….you say  ไปไม่ทัน
• You want to take a train at noon, but you woke up late…. ไปไม่ทัน

And here are some longer sentences to give you some context 

1. เราคุยกันสนุกมากจนไปดูหนังไม่ทัน We had such a good time talking that we missed the movie. (in the sense that the time passed to the point where we couldn’t make it even if we tried)
2. ถ้ารถติดไม่ทันแน่ If there is traffic, we won’t make it (on time) for sure.  
3. ถ้าสั่งวันนี้จะทันไหม ? If I order it today, will I get it on time?  (Maybe you need something by tomorrow and you want to clarify if it can be finished by then.)
4. ไม่หยุดทัน Not able to stop in time (driving)
5. สมัครทันไหม apply in time (as in send an application before the expiry/due date)

In case its not entirely obvious, tone marks are depicted by the first letter of the following: common, low, falling, high, rising.  You should be able to cut and paste it into a spreadsheet to mess around with it to make a SRS file.   If anyone can think of a sentence/phrase that you say everyday that I haven’t mentioned, do bring it up.    

In a country so laid back – its a wonder that you see the word ‘urgent’ written so often that it cancels itself out.

I thought I’d do a quick post on signs that you can find in front of any 7-11 and plenty of other businesses as well.

Words/phrases you might find following the heading - รับ สมัคร ด่วน accepting+applications+urgently

• พนักงาน staff
• ตำแหน่ง position
• ติดต่อ    contact (lit. stick+connect)
• สาขา branch 
•  มีความรับผิดชอบสูง have a high level of responsibility
• จำนวนหลายอัตรา various positions (lit. amount+various+postion) or จำนวน 10 อัตรา
• รอบเช้า ตั้งแต่ 07.00 – 16.00 น.*      รอบเช้า morning shfit
  รอบบ่าย ตั้งแต่ 13.30 – 23.00 น.*                
  รอบค่ำ ตั้งแต่ 22.00 – 08.00 น.*
• เงินเดือนเริ่มต้น starting salary (lit. money+month+starting from)

I realized that a few lines of news might be daunting so I may occasionally explain just headlines as below.

พิษหึงผัวเฒ่าฆ่าเมียน้อยแล้วยิงตัวตาม 

Jealous Husband Shoots Mia Noi Before Turning Gun on Self

พิษหึง poison+jealous

ผัวเฒ่า “husband” + old man

ฆ่าเมียน้อย kill + girlfriend (mia noi = gf on the side)

แล้ว and then

ยิงตัวตาม shoots self afterwards

I was watching Ice Age 2 the other night dubbed in Thai and during one scene one of the mammoths said something along the lines of “ทำให้ีชีวิตมีรสชาติ”  Which means “Give life some flavour”  I don’t feel like I’ve ever heard anyone say that before, but I looked for examples of it online and found loads.  Anyways, make a mental note of the expression and listen for it.  I find that it tends to be a waste of time to actively look for situations when you can use an expression.

นางสาว วิวรรณ หรือ ชื่อเล่นว่า วิว วิวไข กุญแจ เข้าบ้าน ด้วยตนเอง เมื่อกดออดตั้งหลายครั้งแล้ว ก็ยังไม่มีทีท่าว่าจะมีคนมาเปิดประตูใ้ห้ อันที่จริงการกดออดของวิวนั้นหมายถึง ต้องการ เช็คดูว่า มีคนยู่ในบ้านหรือไม่

ไข กุญแจ turn-key

actually she was pushing the buzzer to see if anybody was at home or not (not because she was expecting someone to open the door for her)

คงจะกลับไปแล้ว probably went home already

Getting used to the sounds in any language takes practice.  Getting used to them in a tonal language when you are coming from a non-tonal language is a bit tougher, but as with anything else, it is easily accomplished with a bit of time and effort.

One simple piece of advice that can make a big difference in your pronunciation is to emphasize the last tone of a sentence and to a lesser degree of a stop in a phrase.  Open your mouth a bit when you talk.  Pay attention to what native speakers are doing with their mouths now and then.

Know how to say 3 ?  Know how to say it correctly?  Your mouth should be opening wide at the sides in a big smile-like expression.

Look at the following sentence – พรุ่งนี้  ไม่ว่าง (tomorrow – not free)

There are 2 great opportunities to make your speech sound ชัด here.  Hold that high toned นี้ in พร่งนี้ and make it long and hold it for a moment.  Not too long, but long enough that its a clear high tone.  Then on the ว่าง of ไม่ว่าง…remember its a long vowel and its falling.  The sounds we hear right before a pause are more memorable than the ones that precede them and when you are still trying to climb up that slippery language ladder, little tricks like these will make you sound ชัด beyond your ability bringing the praise that motivates you to keep going.
