กี่โมงน่ะรึ คงสักเที่ยงวันของเมื่อวานได้กระมังโยม ประสกผู้โชคร้ายคนนั้นอยู่บนถนนที่ตัดจากเซกิยามะไปยามาชินะ กำลังเดินไปทางเซกิยามะกับสีกาคนหนึ่งที่ขี่ม้าอยู่ ซึ่งอาตมาเพิ่งมารู้ว่านางเป็นภรรยาของประสกผู้นั้น นางเอาผ้าพันคอโพกหัวคลุมปิดหน้าเอาไว้ อาตมาเห็นแต่สีเสื้อผ้าของนาง เป็นชุดสีม่วงอ่อนๆ ส่วนม้านี่รู้สึกจะเป็นม้าสีน้ำตาลอมแดงอ่อน มีแผงคองามทีเดียว สีกาคนนั้นสูงเท่าไหร่รึ คงสักสี่ฟุตห้านิ้วได้กระมัง อาตมาเป็นสงฆ์ ไม่ได้ใส่ใจรายละเอียดของนางเสียเท่าไร ส่วนผู้ชายพกอาวุธเป็นธนูพร้อมกับลูกศร และเท่าที่อาตมาจำได้ เขามีลูกศรอยู่ในกระบอกประมาณยี่สิบดอกได้
นึกไม่ถึงว่าเขาจะเคราะห์ร้ายอย่างนี้ ชีวิตคนเรานี่หนอ มันช่างเหมือนน้ำค้างตอนเช้า เหมือนแสงแปลบปลาบเวลาฟ้าแลบเสียจริงๆ ไม่มีอะไรคงอยู่ไปตลอดกาล อาตมาเวทนาประสกผู้นั้นจนไม่รู้จะพูดอย่างไรแล้ว

it was probably around noon yesterday I guess.
ประสกผู้โชคร้ายคนนั้น (I met??) that unfortunate fellow(ประสก ??? This must be an error..I was thinking it should be ประสบ – to encounter, but after seeing it again later..I realize its not )
อยู่บนถนน was on the road
ที่ตัดจากเซกิยามะไปยามาชินะ at about the halfway point between Sekiyama and Yamashina
กำลังเดินไปทางเซกิยามะ (he) was heading towards Sekiyama
กับสีกาคนหนึ่งที่ขี่ม้าอยู่ with สีกา (crow colored??) who was riding a horse
ซึ่งอาตมาเพิ่งมารู้ว่า so I then realized that…
นางเป็นภรรยาของประสกผู้นั้น this woman (on the horse) was this man’s wife ..(ประสก again..?? I’m not looking it up!!)
นางเอาผ้าพันคอโพกหัวคลุมปิดหน้าเอาไว้ the woman had a veil wrapped around her head covering her face ( ผ้าพันคอ literally means – ‘a cloth bound around the neck’ and โพกหัว is for cloth that is ‘wrapped-around/covering the head’ such as turbans. ปิดหน้า -closed/covered face. As for เอาไว้, I could explain it but it sounds more confusing than it is so just notice it and forget it for now. You’ll see it often enough if you bother to read and it will soon make sense.
อาตมาเห็นแต่สีเสื้อผ้าของนาง I only saw the color of her veil (อาตมา ‘I’ for priests)
เป็นชุดสีม่วงอ่อนๆ her gear was a light shade of purple
ส่วนม้านี่รู้สึกจะเป็นม้าสีน้ำตาลอมแดงอ่อน as for the horse, I think
it was brownish-red (สีน้ำตาลอมแดง = brown with red in its mouth **This probably translates to a specific color, but I have no clue which. In Japanese its 月毛 which apparently means ‘sorrel.’ As I had no idea what that meant in any language I looked it up to discover I had just wasted 5 minutes to come up with ‘light brown’. Yay. This is why we don’t need to look up every word.)
มีแผงคองามทีเดียว it had a well-trimmed mane (แผงคอ = mane, งาม is the partner word of สวย)
สีกาคนนั้นสูงเท่าไหร่รึ how tall was he eh?? (a few times in this story the person being question repeats the inquirers question aloud. Useful as we never hear the chief’s questions.)
คงสักสี่ฟุตห้านิ้วได้กระมัง he was probably about 4.5 ft tall I’d say (this is just bad translation. The measurement in the Japanese version is a 寸 which is about 3 cm or so. The man was not 4.5 ft tall nor was he 4.5 寸 tall. Though if he was it might make the story even more interesting. In the original version the priest is referring to the height of the HORSE and the 4.5 寸 means he was 4.5 寸 taller than average. Fun stuff.)
อาตมาเป็นสงฆ์ I’m a priest
ไม่ได้ใส่ใจรายละเอียดของนางเสียเท่าไร I don’t know much of the ways of women (ใส่ใจ – pay attention, รายละเอียด details )
ส่วนผู้ชายพกอาวุธเป็นธนูพร้อมกับลูกศร as for the man, he wore a bow along with some arrows (พกอาวุธ – carry a weapon – พก means to carry ‘on your person’ useful word)
และเท่าที่อาตมาจำได้ and as far as I can remember…
เขามีลูกศรอยู่ในกระบอกประมาณยี่สิบดอกได้ he had about 20 or so arrows in his quiver (กระบอก quiver, ลูกศร arrows)

นึกไม่ถึงว่าเขาจะเคราะห์ร้ายอย่างนี้ I never could have imagined misfortune like this…(เคราะห์ร้าย really bad luck)
ชีวิตคนเรานี่หนอ this life of ours…
เหมือนแสงแปลบปลาบเวลาฟ้าแลบเสียจริงๆ is like a flash of lighting (แปลบปลาบ flash, ฟ้าแลบ lightning)
ไม่มีอะไรคงอยู่ไปตลอดกาล nothing lasts forever (คงอยู่ – to last, ตลอดกาล forever)
อาตมาเวทนาประสกผู้นั้น I sympathize with that guy (ประสก again?? its probably a priest word, but I’m not sure what it means exactly. It obviously doesn’t affect the meaning much so its not even worth looking up)
จนไม่รู้จะพูดอย่างไรแล้ว and I don’t know what else to say
