Learn Thai From A White Guy

Alright, its not new nor is it a puppy, but I’m playing with it a lot at the moment and I am liking it so far. The site is lang-8 and it is good stuff.  Its a site where you can go and write whatever nonsense you want in whatever language and people will come and check it for you.  Depending on the language, they may come very quickly.  

It is great because you can go in there and start slinging all those sentences you have in your head that are probably wrong and you can get ém checked without talking to anybody.  

The only thing I’d be wary of is the fact that native speakers aren’t always the best resource when it comes to correction.  They have a tendency to tell you how you are supposed to say something when they don’t even say it that way themselves.  Google stuff before you SRS it.  Make sure it exists and is used.

This piece is rather long for a single post.  I will probably split it up into 2-3.

ข้าฆ่ามันเอง แต่ไม่ได้ฆ่านาง นางอยู่ไหนน่ะรึ  ข้าจะไปรู้ได้ไง  อ้อ อย่าเพิ่ง   จะทรมานอย่างไรข้าก็คงบอกสิ่งที่ข้าไม่รู้ไม่ได้ดอกนะ  ไหนๆ เรื่องมันล่วงเลยมาถึงขั้นกุดหัวขนาดนี้แล้ว ข้าก็คงไม่มีอะไรให้ต้องปิดบังกันอีกหรอก 
    ข้าเจอผัวเมียคู่นั้นเข้าเมื่อวาน ตอนหลังเที่ยงไปนิดหน่อย พอดีมีลมพัดมาวูบหนึ่งทำให้ผ้าคลุมหน้านางเปิดออก ข้าเลยได้เห็นใบหน้าของนางก่อนที่ผ้าจะกลับไปคลุมไว้ตามเดิม นั่นอาจเป็นสาเหตุหนึ่ง นางงามเหมือนกับนางฟ้า ตอนนั้นเองที่ข้าตัดสินใจว่าต้องเอานางมาให้ได้ถึงต้องฆ่าผัวของนางก็ตามที
    ทำไมน่ะหรือ  สำหรับข้า การจะฆ่าใครสักคนไม่ใช่เรื่องใหญ่อย่างที่ใครๆ คิดกัน และเมื่อได้มาเมียมันมา ผัวมันก็ต้องตายอยู่ดี ข้าใช้ดาบข้างกายข้าเป็นอาวุธ มีข้าคนเดียวหรือที่ฆ่าคนรึไง  ตัวท่านเองล่ะ ถึงจะไม่ได้ใช้ดาบ แต่ท่านก็ฆ่าคนด้วยอำนาจ ด้วยเงินของท่าน บางครั้งท่านฆ่าคนโดยอ้างว่าทำเพื่อตัวพวกเขาเอง แน่นอนล่ะว่าคนพวกนั้นอาจไม่ได้เสียเลือดแม้แต่หยดเดียว สุขภาพก็ยังแข็งแรงดีอยู่ แต่มันจะต่างกันตรงไหนในเมื่อท่านก็ได้ฆ่าเขาไปแล้ว มันก็พูดยากนะว่าใครบาปกว่ากัน ท่านหรือข้า (ยิ้มเหยียด)
    แต่ก็คงจะดี ถ้าข้าเอาตัวผู้หญิงมาได้โดยไม่ต้องลงมือฆ่าผู้ชาย ข้าเลยตัดสินใจจะจับตัวนางโดยจะไม่ฆ่าผู้ชาย แต่จะทำอย่างนั้นบนถนนยามาชินะคงไม่ได้ ข้าจึงจัดการลวงทั้งคู่ไปที่ภูเขา

แต่ไม่ได้ฆ่านาง but I didn’t kill the girl

นางอยู่ไหนน่ะรึ   Where is she? (he is repeating the question of the one interviewing him)

ข้าจะไปรู้ได้ไง  how am I supposed to know?  (good SRS – จะรู้ได้ยังไง)

อ้อ อย่าเพิ่ง  oh..don’t even think about it….  

จะทรมานอย่างไรข้าก็ no matter how much you torture me…

คงบอกสิ่งที่ข้าไม่รู้ไม่ได้ดอกนะ I still can’t answer questions that I don’t know the answer to…

ไหนๆ เรื่องมันล่วงเลยมาถึงขั้นกุดหัวขนาดนี้แล้ว anyways, as crazy as things are now…

ข้าก็คงไม่มีอะไรให้ต้องปิดบังกันอีกหรอก I’m not likely to hold anything back at this point…

ตอนหลังเที่ยงไปนิดหน่อย a bit after noon

พอดีมีลมพัดมาวูบหนึ่งทำให้ผ้าคลุมหน้านางเปิดออก as soon as a gust of wind came and briefly blew aside the woman’s veil 

ข้าเลยได้เห็นใบหน้าของนาง revealing her face

ก่อนที่ผ้าจะกลับไปคลุมไว้ตามเดิม before returning to its previous position

นั่นอาจเป็นสาเหตุหนึ่ง that may have been the reason

นางงามเหมือนกับนางฟ้า she was beautiful like an angel 

ตอนนั้นเองที่ข้าตัดสินใจว่า that was when I decided ..

ต้องเอานางมาให้ได้ that I must have her..

ถึงต้องฆ่าผัวของนางก็ตามที  even if that meant killing her husband in the process

สำหรับข้า  for me..

ไม่ใช่เรื่องใหญ่อย่างที่ใครๆ คิดกัน isn’t that big of a deal..(like everyone thinks)

และเมื่อได้มาเมียมันมา and when this girl came along

ผัวมันก็ต้องตายอยู่ดี her husband, well he just had to die

ข้าใช้ดาบข้างกายข้าเป็นอาวุธ I kill with the sword at my side

มีข้าคนเดียวหรือที่ฆ่าคนรึไง  its me doing the killing

ตัวท่านเองล่ะ but you sir…

ถึงจะไม่ได้ใช้ดาบ you don’t use a sword..

แต่ท่านก็ฆ่าคนด้วยอำนาจ but you still kill with your authority/power

ด้วยเงินของท่าน with your money

บางครั้งท่านฆ่าคนโดยอ้างว่าทำเพื่อตัวพวกเขาเอง sometimes, you even kill them with your words 

แน่นอนล่ะว่า of course…

คนพวกนั้นอาจไม่ได้เสียเลือดแม้แต่หยดเดียว you may not spill a drop of their blood…

สุขภาพก็ยังแข็งแรงดีอยู่ and they still live (are healthy)

แต่มันจะต่างกันตรงไหน but how is it different..

ในเมื่อท่านก็ได้ฆ่าเขาไปแล้ว when you have killed them 

มันก็พูดยากนะว่าใครบาปกว่ากัน its difficult to decide who the sinner is..

ท่านหรือข้า (ยิ้มเหยียด) you..or I (ironic smile)

แต่จะทำอย่างนั้น but how was I supposed to do that

คงไม่ได้  it just wouldn’t work (SRS-worthy)

ข้าจึงจัดการลวงทั้งคู่ไปที่ภูเขา so I lured the pair into the mountains…

In my experience, there are 3 stages involved in going from the stage where you sort of understand to being able to use something in a language.  You don’t have as much control as you might think and schools and teachers usually have even less. 

We could analyze this stuff much deeper, but I find this to be the easy way to break it down.  We progress through these stages by encountering these words/expressions/sentences in real life (read/heard/tried to use).  Spaced repitition will significantly increase the chance of the words in question staying in your short term memory indefinitely so that when you encounter a situation where it is used…you can remember/use/understand it.

1. Able to understand the underlying meaning of the question and possibly able to offer a simple answer such as in the case of กินข้าวรึยัง – กินแล้ว  or “have you eaten yet?” — “ate already” but unable to reproduce the original question or even work out for certain the words involved. It is still just a string of sounds which one can’t distinguish between or repeat with any accuracy.
2. Able to understand the entire meaning and can now pick up most of the words in the sentence and answer properly, but still unlikely to be able to produce the actual question correctly.
3. After having heard the sentence countless times, with varied repetition, we reach a stage where we can completely understand the question in most if not all of its forms and can now reproduce it naturally (or close to it) as we have heard it used naturally repeatedly for some time now.

Being able to say the correct tone is great and all, but ultimately if you want to speak ชัด-ly, it all comes down to rhythm.  Reading stuff out loud helps.  Having a native speaker correct you is good also.  If this isn’t convienent, then just having the original audio for a body of text is fine as well.   Start easy.  Look for interesting content.   Listen to it a lot.  If you need help finding interesting content, just ask.  

Here are some easy common examples:  

ไป ไหน มา      common-rising-common

ว่า จะ ใด         falling-low-common

ไม่ ว่าง             f – f

ไ ม่ ได้ ไป     f – f- c

วัน นี้  เหรอ   c-high-r

ใช่เจ้าค่ะท่าน ศพนั่นคือคนที่แต่งงานกับลูกสาวอิฉันเอง เขาไม่ใช่คนโตเกียวดอกเจ้าค่ะ แต่เป็นซามุไรในเมืองโคคุฟุ จังหวัดวาคาซะ เขาชื่อคานาซาวะ โนะ ทาเคฮิโกะ อายุยี่สิบหกปี ท่าทางเป็นคนสุภาพ อิฉันว่าเขาไม่น่าจะไปทำให้ใครขัดเคืองนะเจ้าคะ

ใช่เจ้าค่ะท่าน That’s correct sir.

คือคนที่  is the person 

แต่งงานกับลูกสาวอิฉันเอง  who is married to my daughter 

 เขาไม่ใช่คนโตเกียวดอกเจ้าค่ะ  He isn’t from Tokyo (I’m not entirely sure what the ดอก is here, but 2 things seem possible, either it is expressing a high level of certainty about the statement or its some old school word that goes along with the เจ้า (ดอกเจ้า?) in which case I have no clue.  Waste of my time to look it up either way as the story still makes sense in any case)

แต่เป็นซามุไร but rather he is a samurai 

ในเมืองโคคุฟุ From kokufu (place name)

จังหวัดวาคาซะ in the province of Wakasa

 เขาชื่อคานาซาวะ โนะ ทาเคฮิโกะ  His name was Kanazawa no Takehiro (Thai transliteration is wrong so I’m putting what it should be)

ไม่น่าจะ  wouldn’t likely …
