I’ll break down this short article in the following post.  First, I wanna talk about killing.

การุณฆาต

การุณฆาต

You know how in English someone who has a bit of previous knowledge can often break up a word into pieces to get an idea of what it might mean?  Well, it should come as no surpise that Thai is the same way.  Look at the beginning of การุณฆาต and you find การุณ which you may have come across as การุณา which phrase books label as meaning ‘please.’   Anyways, การุณ actually means something along the lines of ‘kindness’  so ฆารุณฆาต means ‘kind death’ or mercy killing (think euthanasia).

The second part of the word ฆาต is one of the few words that uses the letter “ฆ” so let’s try and remember it.  ฆาต usually means death and there are a few other words that we can come up with with the same or similar letter combo.

I realized that a few lines of news might be daunting so I may occasionally explain just headlines as below.

Do you read the news everyday?  At least the headlines that pop up on whatever sites you happen to frequent?  Well, why don’t you read them in Thai?

I scan headlines in Japanese and Thai nearly everyday and I read any articles that sound interesting.  You don’t need to be particularly skilled in a language to start reading the news.  You may be thinking I’m crazy, and while I can’t really argue with that, I’m actually quite serious.

What is a headline anyways?  Its a short, catchy, grammatically simple phrase or sentence thats meant to lure us into reading further.  Following the headline is the lead which tells us the who-what-where-why-when-how-izms of the story.  The language used is considerably more finite than that say of literature or even magazines so in a very short time we can begin flying through those handful of sentences.

Tips to Remember

• We only want the main idea – if you can grasp it while not knowing every word and not having to look any up – you are golden!
• Learn the words/abbreviations for places and be able to recognize which words are just names of people and places you’ve never heard of and ignore them.
• Stick to the same type of news for a while (I prefer crime and disasters)
• Do it everyday – Start easy – 2-5 minutes (it quickly becomes easier and more interesting as you can work out the story very quickly and then reread to get any extra details)
• Don’t look everything up!  You aren’t likely to remember it all anyways so its just a waste of energy.  You will begin to see the same words again and again and you will remember them and how they are used because of the repetitiveness found in the news.

And if this still sounds too daunting than there is another equally effective way – read an article in English first, than look it up in the language(s) you are learning and read it there.  It isn’t likely to be a translation, but the story is the same so its just a matter of writing.  You can still greatly benefit from this method as well.  Do whatever works, or rather whatever seems less like work as in the end it comes down to you and what you do on your own time.  I don’t have time to teach you everything (nor do I know enough myself!) and you are a fool if you think any school or textbook can give you everything you need.

All I can do is save you some time by eliminating as many of the mistakes I made as possible from your journey into fluency.  Each language you learn makes it easier because you become aware of all the things you did wrong the last time.

Well, literally the head line is : ‘Somalia Seizes Malasian Boat,’ but direct translations are almost always misleading so let’s read on and see what this is really about.

มาเลเซีย – โจรสลัด โซมาเลีย อาละวาด อีกคราวนี้ บุกปล้น เรือน้ำมัน มาเลย์ หลังก่อนหน้านี้ปล้นเรือสินค้าไทย

มาเลเซีย – Malaysia

โจร สลัด pirate (โจน สะหลัด c l-l) โจร means thief while means pirate.

**สลัด is the same spelling for ‘salad’ so if you imagine a crew of pirates who steal salads, you

might find yourself with a useful mnemonic.

โซมาเลีย Somalia

อาละวาด to do something in a violent or crazy manner

อีก คราว นี้ yet again

บุก ปล้น attack-plunder

เรือน้ำมัน oil tanker (boat-oil)

มาเลย์ Malaysian

หลัง after; following

So what does it all mean?

Somalian pirates hijacked a Malaysian oil tanker this time.  Last time they hijacked a ship carrying Thai cargo.

Khatzumoto of AJATT offered a really good suggestion recently – when you want to start using a monolingual dictionary in the language you are learning, start by looking up words you know.

Since most people tend to be under the assumption this is a terrible or too difficult idea, I’m going to do some of the work for you.  And I’m going to do it using Thai Wikipedia, so there may be mistakes, but at least you will be seeing normal usage of the language.  I’m not going to explain every single word as part of learning is doing some of the work yourself.

Now lets break this down a bit to make things managable.

เป้น If you are reading this you should know this word by now. Lets just say it starts the article out like “(DRM) is…”

เทคโนโลยี transliteration of ‘technology’ although if you asked me to transliterate, I’d go with something that sounds closer to the English version, such as, เทตนอหล่ะจี But alas, thats not how things work here.

การควบคุม this usually means ‘control,’ but to clarify it in this situation think of it as ‘managing limitations/restrictions’

การใช้ usage (more like access in this case)

ดิจิตอล มีเดีย transliteration of ‘digital media’

So far this gives us something along the lines of

“(DRM) is the technology that is used to limit/restrict access to digital media.”

เพื่อ for the purpose of

ไม่ให้ not allowing (lit. not give) ..restricting

ผู้ใช้สุดท้าย end-users (lit. people-use-last)
