Learn Thai From A White Guy

It may be a bit tough, but it’s also pretty funny.   Give it a try as is first.  Try to pick out and ignore people and place names as they aren’t important for us here.  The link to the vocab is below the article in the hopes that you will at least skim before looking at the vocab.

ขณะที่เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจกำลังตรวจรอยนิ้วมืออยู่ภายในห้องพักของน.ส.ศรีสุพรรณปรากฏว่าได้กลิ่นปลาทูทอดโชยออกมาจากห้องเช่าข้างๆ  ซึ่งเจ้าทุกข์เอะใจ เพราะของที่โดนขโมยมีปลาทูรวมอยู่ด้วย จึงแจ้งเจ้าหน้าที่ให้เข้าไปตรวจสอบ พบครีมตัดเหล็ก อุปกรณ์งัดแงะ พร้อมสิ่งของที่มาขโมยมาหลายรายการ ได้แก่ ทีวี เครื่องเสียง คอมพิวเตอร์  ใบจำนำทองคำรูปพรรณหลายรายการ   อยู่ภายในห้องพักดังกล่าว และพบหลักฐานชิ้นสำคัญคือปลาทูทอดที่หายไปเมื่อรุ่งเช้า อยู่ในจานภายในห้องพัก จึงควบคุมตัวนายสาธิต งานลำยวง อายุ 39 ปี เจ้าของห้องไปสอบสวน ก่อนจะรับสารภาพว่าเป็นคนลงมือก่อเหตุลักทรัพย์ด้วยตนเอง

Vocab/Notes/Translation

One of the most frustrating things (primarily because of how time consuming it is) I experience as both a teacher and a learner is finding bodies of text that are somewhat related and contain crossover words and phrases.  Back in the days when I would occasionally get roped into teaching private English lessons I would buy a bunch of those Penguin Readers (out of my own pocket of course) and force my students to choose whichever one looked interesting to them and read it on the days between lessons.  Then they’d have to come back and tell me what it was about.  If their English was still on the low end I would tell them what it was about in different words over and over again while asking them questions to keep them involved and confirm that they were actually trying to read.   While the majority of these students faded out after a while,  a few of them actually put in some effort and improved dramatically in a short time.  It was just a matter of gradually letting them build up the vocabulary and perhaps more importantly confidence to talk about something.  When they didn’t know a word, I’d just tell them to use one from their language and then I’d note down what words they didn’t know so I could pummel the learner with them over and over in future lessons if they were important for telling the particular story.  If they started to get bored or frustrated with a book we’d start a new one,  but we would always come back to the previous one.  I’d spend a few minutes during each lesson asking them to tell me the story of The Murders in the Rue Morgue or whatever stories we had already read.  This significantly reinforced the whole process because I didn’t give them the opportunity to completely forget anything.  Many people do not have the slightest amount of discipline for doing flashcards so I would just sit and do the cards with them.  This allows me to to have them read it or turn the screen away so I can turn a card into a production card (where the learner is producing something as opposed to just reading/understanding) on the spot to check if they truly know it or are just able to recognize it.  Admittedly this is a pricey way to do flashcards (as I’m being paid for my time), but people tend to work harder when people are watching them.  I can’t stress enough how well this stuff works.  This is of course affected by how much effort the student and the teacher put into it.

It’s be pretty awesome if Penguin translated some of these books into other languages so more people could benefit.  Me for example.

Here are a few words to help you out:

มนุษย์ต่างดาว – alien
หมายถึง – to mean; means; refers to
หลา – yard
จานบิน – I think you can figure this one out
เผชิญ – to meet; to encounter
ประสบการณ์ – to experience; to encounter
การติดต่อสื่อสาร – communication (contact + communicate)

การเผชิญหน้ากับมนุษย์ต่างดาว

ได้มีการแบ่งประเภทการเผชิญหน้ากับมนุษย์ต่างดาวไว้ 5 ระดับ คือ
การเผชิญหน้าระดับที่หนึ่ง (Close Encounters of the First Kind) หมายถึง การได้พบปะหรือเจอะเจอกับจานบินหรือมนุษย์ต่างดาวในระยะที่ไกลห่างออกไป เช่น จานบินลอยอยู่บนท้องฟ้า หรืออยู่ห่างจากผู้ที่พบเจอในระยะ 50 หลา เป็นต้น
การเผชิญหน้าระดับที่สอง (Close Encounters of the Second Kind) หมายถึง การพบปะกับจานบินหรือมนุษย์ต่างดาวคล้ายกับการเผชิญหน้าระดับที่หนึ่ง แต่อยู่ในระยะที่ใกล้ขึ้น เช่น อาจพบจานบินที่จอดอยู่บนพื้น เป็นต้น
การเผชิญหน้าระดับที่สาม (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) หมายถึง การได้เข้าไปในจานบินจะด้วยสาเหตุใดก็ตามแต่สามารถจดจำประสบการณ์ได้และสามารถออกมาได้

So I watched Wolverine today.  I thought it was decent.  I was entertained even though I was bullied into watching it at Robinsons which I despise due to 21-28 minutes of pre-movie garbage (and paying 140 baht when I can watch it at Central for 70 = no-good).  Maybe 4 minutes of that are previews.  And in the Thai subtitles at the end it says something like อย่าพุ่งไป…จะมีอะไรต่อ.  Don’t bother.  You can wait through 10 minutes of credits to see Wolverine drink 2 shots of booze in Japan.  Oooh.   Wish I had left with everyone else…

อย่าพุ่งไป = don’t run off (just yet)

พุ่ง is a surprisingly useful word that I didn’t really know until last year.  Perhaps I’ll do a whole post on it sometime if I remember (dubious).  Remind me!

This one shouldn’t be too tough.  Give it a try.  Really..just do it for 5 minutes.  I pulled it from movieseer.com which is occasionally useful for movie showtimes, but not always correct.  The Thai is almost always short and easy.  This is a good example…

Now lets break this down a bit to make things managable.

เป้น If you are reading this you should know this word by now. Lets just say it starts the article out like “(DRM) is…”

เทคโนโลยี transliteration of ‘technology’ although if you asked me to transliterate, I’d go with something that sounds closer to the English version, such as, เทตนอหล่ะจี But alas, thats not how things work here.

การควบคุม this usually means ‘control,’ but to clarify it in this situation think of it as ‘managing limitations/restrictions’

การใช้ usage (more like access in this case)

ดิจิตอล มีเดีย transliteration of ‘digital media’

So far this gives us something along the lines of

“(DRM) is the technology that is used to limit/restrict access to digital media.”

เพื่อ for the purpose of

ไม่ให้ not allowing (lit. not give) ..restricting

ผู้ใช้สุดท้าย end-users (lit. people-use-last)

“DRM is a technology that restricts/limits end-users’ access to digital media content.”

ทำการเจาะรบบ access the system (lit. do-drilling-system)

ทำสำเนา copy; duplicate

หรือการเปลี่ยนแปลงไปเป็นรูปแบบอื่น or change its form into something else
