 เขาไม่ใช่คนโตเกียวดอกเจ้าค่ะ  He isn’t from Tokyo (I’m not entirely sure what the ดอก is here, but 2 things seem possible, either it is expressing a high level of certainty about the statement or its some old school word that goes along with the เจ้า (ดอกเจ้า?) in which case I have no clue.  Waste of my time to look it up either way as the story still makes sense in any case)

แต่เป็นซามุไร but rather he is a samurai 

ในเมืองโคคุฟุ From kokufu (place name)

จังหวัดวาคาซะ in the province of Wakasa

วางแผนซับซ้อน – to create a complex plan

As before, this was taken from Mary Haas Thai Reader found at the SEAlang Thai corpus.  What I’m trying to do is make these stories more accessible and effective.  I’ve tried reading with translations and have gotten mixed results.  I still think piecemeal vocab explanations and/or hints as below which require you to think and make it harder to be lazy works better in the long run.  

เรื่องลาโง่

ครั้งหนึ่ง ยังมีลาตัวหนึ่ง กำลังเดินหาอาหารกินอยู่ในป่า ขณะที่กำลังเดินและเล็มใบหญ้า ใบไม้อยู่นั้น ได้ยินเสียงจิ้งหรีดร้องเพราะยิ่งนัก จึงได้หยุดฟังอยู่ และอยากจะร้องได้เพราะอย่างจิ้งหรีดบ้าง เมื่อจิ้งหรีดหยุดร้องแล้ว จึงร้องถามไปว่า ‘ท่านกินอะไร เสียงจึงได้เพราะและหวานยิ่งนัก’ จิ้งหรีดจึงตอบไปว่า ‘เรากินแต่เพียงน้ำค้างที่ตกอยู่บนใบไม้ใบหญ้า ถ้าท่านทำเช่นนั้น ท่านก็คงจะมีเสียงเพราะเหมือนเรา’ ลาได้ฟังดังนั้นก็ดีใจ และตั้งแต่วันนั้นเป็นต้นมา ลาก็ไม่กินหญ้าและใบไม้อีก ได้แต่เลียน้ำค้างบนใบไม้ หวังจะมีเสียงเพราะ ต่อมาไม่นานนัก ลาโง่ตัวนั้น ก็อ่อนเพลียลงและในไม่ช้าก็ตาย 

Possible SRS sentences from this piece: 

• มีลาตัวหนึ่ง กำลังเดินหาอาหารกิน (or split at space if its too long for you) 
• เมื่อจิ้งหรีดหยุดร้องแล้ว
• ถ้าทำเช่นนั้น….

Remember, if you are just starting to read, its not a bad idea to insert spaces between words (not syllables – ex. เมื่อ จิ้งหรีด หยุด ร้อง แล้ว ) in your SRS.  This is an acceptable crutch for a short time.  The point of it being to make the reviewing of cards on a daily basis easier to handle.  It takes time to get used to a routine and ones that stress you out won’t last very long.

Alright, well I thought I’d have finished by now, but its turning into more work than I had anticipated.  And its not as easy as I thought to pick out those everyday sentences.

Anyways, while I am still messing with the format to make it easier to view, you can view the progress on google docs here.  I’m probably going to get rid of the tones/notes column and put that info in as comments so when you mouse over the Thai words, it will pop up.  However, at the moment, you can’t change the font size of comments on Google docs, so its kinda hard to read.  Suggestions welcome.

This one comes from Mary Haas Thai Reader which I pulled from the SEA Thai Corpus at http://www.sealang.net/lab/justread.  You might want to put the italicized phrases in your SRS if you can’t already produce them at will.

In case its not entirely obvious, tone marks are depicted by the first letter of the following: common, low, falling, high, rising.  You should be able to cut and paste it into a spreadsheet to mess around with it to make a SRS file.   If anyone can think of a sentence/phrase that you say everyday that I haven’t mentioned, do bring it up.    

Instead of wasting too much time studying vocab lists and boring grammatical stuff that you will just forget anyways, why not learn a bunch of super important short sentences?  When I say learn, I mean learn-absorb-remember.  How can we do that?  Well, its a bit much to memorize for some people so what we need to do is repeatedly test ourselves on it until it sticks.  This usually occurs when we have used or encounterd the phrase/setence in a real-life situation.  It tends to solidify the structure in our mind somehow.

There are plenty of programs out there.  As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I have been using Anki for sometime, but you can experiment with others if you like.  If you need help setting up cards or need some starter decks, I will help if I can.
Now on to sentences.  I’m not sure how long this will take me, but I’m working on a list of 100 super-necessary short sentences that you need to function at any level in a language.  I plan this to also be somewhat of an experiment for my current studies in Burmese.  More on this later.  On to the sentences.

As for setting up the cards, there are a few options.  I’d just recommend placing the English phrase on front side and the Thai with notes on the back.  If you get the hang of the software you can set it up so you have production and recognition so you are asked to come up with the Thai phrase from the English and vice versa with the notes appearing along with whichever side is the answer, but that’s up to you.  .
