ก็วันนี้ตอนแรก  ตอนประมาณ 3 โมง ก่อน 4 โมงนะ  เพราะบู๋มีสอน 4 โมง มันจะว่างชั่วโมงหนึ่ง  ก็กะว่าจะไปนวดตัวเพราะรู้สึกเมื่อยอย่างเงี่ย ก็เดินไปแถวซอยที่หอ มันก็จะมีร้านหนึ่งเขียนว่า Body Relax ก็กะว่า เออ! มันต้องมีเป็นนวดตัว เป็น massage เป็นสปา อะไรอย่างเงี่ย ก็เลยเดินเข้าไป แล้วบอกเค้าว่า “พี่ค่ะ นวดตัวเท่าไหร่ค่ะ ชั่วโมงล่ะเท่าไหร่” อะไรอย่างเงี่ย แล้วเสร็จแล้วคนที่รับเค้าก็บอกว่า “เออ!ลูกค้ามา” เค้าก็ไปเรียกอีกคนหนึ่งมา แล้วอีกคนคือเหมือนเป็นเจ้าของ เค้าก็มาแล้วเค้าก็บอกว่า “อ่า…..มี…มีธุระอะไรหรือปล่าวค่ะ” อะไรอย่างงเย เราก็เลยถามว่า “เออ!นวดตัวราคาเท่าไหร่ค่ะต่อชั่วโมง”อะไรอย่างเงี่ย เค้าก็เลยทำท่าแบบว่า อายๆหน่อยแล้วเค้าก็บอกว่า “เออ!รับเฉพาะผู้ชายค่ะ”555++โอโฮ้!เท่านั้นแหละบู๋รู้สึกแบบเพร๊ง…! หน้าแตก แล้วบู๋ก็ไม่เข้าใจนะ ว่าเอ๊ะแล้วทำไมต้องรับแต่ผู้ชาย เพื่อนมันเข้าใจล่ะ มันก็ลาก “แกออกมานี่”แล้วก็เดินกันออกไป”ว่าแล้วว่าเราต้องเดินเข้าผิดแน่ๆเลย” แล้วก็เลยไปหาในเซ็นทรัลอะไรอย่างงเย(ร้าที่อยู่ซอยหอเหรอ)อืม! ที่ซอยที่ตรงข้างๆรร.สอนดนตรีนะ รร.สอนดนตรีสันตินะ มันเขียนติดว่า Body Relax ไง บู๋ก็ใจว่า(ทำท่าทาง) อะไรอย่างเงี่ย คือโง่นะ ก็เดินเข้าไป น่าแตกเลย เสียใจอ๊อ! ถ้าว่างไปดิ 555+ (ไม่ไปดีกว่า) จบแล้ว

Yabu no naka ( In a Grove) by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa.

This is a great story I read through (albeit slowly) last year in Japanese. It took me a while, but it was worth it. Now I know words like grove in Japanese..erm..yay? Now lets do it together in Thai. I just came across it thanks to Rikker from Thai 101 who was nice enough to mention this blog in a recent post. I had no idea there was a decent sized library of translated works available so I am pleased. Reading translated stories is a great way to break into literature in any language. The key is to stay interested so don’t worry if the language isn’t 100% natural. It doesn’t matter. Exposure is exposure and we will start with what we like.

I’m gonna post this story in pieces and I’ll go through it as I read it. I’ll show you how I might go about mining the story for SRS material and which words I don’t bother even though I’ve never encountered them before since its obvious by context. First example of that is ป่าละเมาะ . While I certainly know that ป่า is forest, I’ve never seen ละเมาะ before, but we can all guess what that must be.   I’ll paste the section in full first..then I’ll paste pieces of it below with definitions, notes or translations as I see fit.  When reading always try to scan through once or twice first.  Skip everything you don’t know.  If something unknown appears numerous times and you notice it..then maybe think about making a note.  Please don’t stop and look up every word.  This is reading not work.

ตรงไหนแน่หรือขอรับ Where was it exactly eh? (thinking to himself aloud)

คงสัก 150 เมตรจากทางรถม้ายามาชินะ It was about 150 metres from the Yamashina road(which is for horses).

ตรงป่าไผ่กับป่าสนที่ in the woods where the bamboo and cedar trees

เลยออกไปอีกน่ะ mix together

ขอรับ = ครับ (ครับ was ขอรับ way back when. Say it real fast and you’ll get the idea)

Paragraph 2

Did I see a sword or any weapons? เทือก (I know this word as a classifier for mountains..apparently it also applies to weapons)

ไม่เห็นอะไรเลยขอรับใต้เท้า I can’t say I saw anything at all

ข้าน้อยเห็นแต่เชือกที่โคนต้นสนใกล้ๆ และ I just saw a piece of rope lying at the base of the tree (โคนต้นสน base of cedar tree)
…อ้า oh yea!

นอกจากเชือกแล้ว aside from the rope…

ก็เจอหวีเล่มหนึ่ง I noticed a comb (หวีเล่มหนึ่ง = comb+classifier+1)

เท่านั้นแหละขอรับ yea…that was it

ท่าทางก่อนที่เขาจะถูกฆ่าตาย as for the way he died….(what happened before he was killed)

คงมีการต่อสู้กันน่ะขอรับ probably involved some sort of struggle

เพราะหญ้ากับใบไผ่ที่ร่วงหล่นอยู่ because the grass and fallen bamboo leaves

มีรอยเหยียบย่ำเต็มไปหมด had been completely trampled

“เห็นม้าอยู่แถวนั้นไหม” Did I see a horse anywhere around??

ไม่เห็นขอรับใต้เท้า No sir.

แค่คนจะเดินเข้าไปก็ยังยาก I’d say it’d be tough for a horse to get up in that area

อย่าว่าแต่ม้าเลย and not just for horses…

Good SRS Ideas:

  • เห็นม้าอยู่แถวนั้นไหม (replace ม้า with anything)
  • เต็มไปหมด – completely covered in…..
  • คงมี…. – there probably was /…..probably happened
  • ไม่เห็นอะไรเลย I didn’t see/notice anything
  • มีเหลือบตัวหนึ่ง (replace เหลือบ with something more common..)
  • ผู้รับผิดชอบ – person in charge/the person responsible
  • เมื่อเช้านี้ this morning…
  • ตอนที่ไป…..(when I was going to ………..do something….)
  • นอนหงาย – lie on your back

This one is especially useful…

“สุดยอด!” ชาวปพระมงอุทานอย่างตื่นเต้น “แล้วผ้าปิดตานั่น”

“เหงื่อเ้ข้าตา”   โจรสลัดตอบเสียงเบาๆ

“อะไรนะ! …  ท่านเสียตาไปเพราะพิษเหงื่องั้นหรือ”

“เอ่อ…” โจรสลัีดตอบเขินๆ “พอดีมันเป้นวันแรกที่ข้าเพิ่งใส่มือตะขอ…”

สุดยอด Whoa! ; amazing!

อุทานอย่างตื่นเต้น exclaimed excitedly

ผ้าปิดตา eyepatch

เหงื่อเ้ข้าตา saliva went into (my) eye

ตอบเสียงเบาๆ answered quietly

ตอบเขินๆ answered abashedly;shyly

พอดีมันเป้นวันแรก well the thing is, it was the first day

Short Story #2 The Little Egg Who Wanted Legs July 1, 2008

How to go about this:

As long as you are ok on the alphabet, there is no reason you can’t start with a story like this.  If there are too many words you don’t know, just begin with one sentence a day.  You need repitition or you are wasting your time.  You can’t just exercise once and get anything out of it.  You can’t work one day and retire.  Pick up a story or 2 and read as much as you can each day.  Do 1 sentence until its easy.  Then do 2.  And go back and read sentences you’ve read before because you need to see them again anyways.  Might as well do it as you are moving along in the story.  It works.  If you need more details on a sentence or a word, please ask!

Its ok to read my translation first and then work out the Thai.  I do both in my studies of other languages.  It makes it easier to dig into tougher material if you already know the story.  Its not cheating.  You can cheat on tests, you can’t cheat at learning.  Whatever keeps you from quitting or getting bored is a good thing.

เรื่อง ไข่น้อยอยากมีขา

กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว ในโรงนาของชาวนาคนหนึ่ง มีไข่ฟองหนึ่งมองดูพี่ๆของมันวิ่งเล่นอย่างสนุกสนาน แต่ไข่น้อยไม่มีขาจึงอยากได้ขาไว้วิ่งเล่นอย่างพี่ๆ ไข่น้อยจึงออกเดินทางไปตามหาคนที่จะให้ขาแก่ตนได้ ไข่น้อยกลิ้งไปเรื่อยๆ พบแม่วัวกำลังกินหญ้าอยู่กลางทุ่ง ไข่น้อยจึงเข้าไปหาและบอกแม่วัวว่า “แม่วัวจ๋า ขอขาให้ฉันหน่อยสิจ๊ะ” แม่วัวจึงบอกกับไข่น้อยว่า “ไม่ได้หรอกจ้ะ ธรรมชาติของวัวต้องมี 4 ขา ฉันจึงไม่สามารถให้ขาแก่เธอได้” ไข่น้อยจึงเดินทางต่อไป แล้วได้ไปพบกับสุนัข ไข่น้อยจึงเข้าไปขอขากับสุนัข สุนัขจึงบอกว่า “ฉันให้ขาแก่เธอไม่ได้หรอก เพราะไม่งั้นฉันก็ไม่มีขาไว้วิ่งเล่นน่ะสิ” ไข่น้อยร้องไห้เสียใจ จึงกลับไปหาแม่ แม่ของไข่น้อยจึงปลอบใจและให้มานอนกับแม่ ไข่น้อยเขาไปนอนกับแม่ และเผลอหลับไปถึง 2 สัปดาห์เต็มๆ ด้วยความอบอุ่นจากแม่ ทำให้ไข่น้อยฟักออกมาเป็นตัว ขนสีเหลือง มีสองขาที่อยากได้เหมือนพี่ๆ และได้ชื่อใหม่ว่า “ลูกเจี๊ยบ”

  • นานมาแล้ว long ago (lit. long-came-already)

  • จ๊ะ – similar to above

มีไข่ฟองหนึ่งมองดูพี่ๆของมันวิ่งเล่นอย่างสนุกสนาน there was an egg watching his older siblings running and playing

แต่ไข่น้อยไม่มีขา But, the little egg didn’t have any legs

จึงอยากได้ขาไว้วิ่งเล่นอย่างพี่ๆ so it wanted to have some (legs) so it could run and play like its older siblings

ไข่น้อยจึงออกเดินทางไปตามหาคนที่จะให้ขาแก่ตนได้ so the little egg went out in search of someone who could give him some legs

ไข่น้อยกลิ้งไปเรื่อยๆ the little egg rolled along..

พบแม่วัวกำลังกินหญ้าอยู่กลางทุ่ง and came across a cow who was munching away on some grass out in a pasture

ไข่น้อยจึงเข้าไปหาและบอกแม่วัวว่า the little egg went into the meadow and approached the cow and said…

“แม่วัวจ๋า ขอขาให้ฉันหน่อยสิจ๊ะ” Miss Cow – can you not spare a leg or 2 for me please?

แม่วัวจึงบอกกับไข่น้อยว่า the cow answered ….

“ไม่ได้หรอกจ้ะ    “I’m afraid not dear….

ธรรมชาติของวัวต้องมี 4 ขา  It is natural for cows to have 4 legs

ฉันจึงไม่สามารถให้ขาแก่เธอได้” and I’m unable to spare any for you”

ไข่น้อยจึงเดินทางต่อไป And so the little egg continued on

แล้วได้ไปพบกับสุนัข until it came across a dog

ไข่น้อยจึงเข้าไปขอขากับสุนัข so it went and asked the dog for legs

สุนัขจึงบอกว่า and the dog said….

“ฉันให้ขาแก่เธอไม่ได้หรอก “I’m afraid I can’t give you any of my legs….

เพราะไม่งั้นฉันก็ไม่มีขาไว้วิ่งเล่นน่ะสิ” because then I wouldn’t have any legs to run and play with”

ไข่น้อยร้องไห้เสียใจ The little egg began to cry in its despair

จึงกลับไปหาแม่ so it went home to its mother

แม่ของไข่น้อยจึงปลอบใจและให้มานอนกับแม่ the eggs mother consoled it and invited the egg come sleep with her

ไข่น้อยเขาไปนอนกับแม่ and so the egg did (go sleep with its แม่)

และเผลอหลับไปถึง 2 สัปดาห์เต็มๆ and it stayed in a deep sleep for a full 2 weeks

ด้วยความอบอุ่นจากแม่ And from its mother’s warmth

ทำให้ไข่น้อยฟักออกมาเป็นตัวขนสีเหลือง came forth a yellow feathered body

มีสองขาที่อยากได้เหมือนพี่ๆ and it had 2 legs just like its older siblings

และได้ชื่อใหม่ว่า “ลูกเจี๊ยบ” and it received the name ‘chick’

ณ ป่าแห่งหนึ่งมีเต่ากับลิงเป็นเพื่อนกัน เต่าเป็นสัตว์ที่มีนิสัยซื่อสัตย์ ส่วนลิงนั้นเป็นสัตว์ที่มีนิสัยขี้โกหก เมื่อเกิดอะไรขึ้น ก็จะช่วยกันเสมอ วันหนึ่งเต่ากำลังเดินเล่นอยู่ก็ไปเจอตะกร้าผลไม้ เต่าจึงนำไปถามหาเจ้าของ หลายชั่วโมงผ่านไปค่างก็มารับตะกร้าผลไม้คืน ค่างก็ชมเต่าว่าเป็นสัตว์ที่มีนิสัยซื่อสัตย์ ลิงเห็นดังนั้นจึงนึกอิจฉาในความดีของเต่า จึงไปขโมยตะกร้าของค่างมาแล้วประกาศหาเจ้าของ ค่างเห็นดังนั้นจึงรู้ว่าลิงขโมยไป จึงพูดว่าลิงขี้ขโมย ลิงก็พูดว่าไม่ได้ขโมยไปแต่เจออยู่ นับจากนั้นมาก็ไม่มีสัตว์ตัวไหนไปเล่นกับลิงอีกเลย ลิงจึงรู้สึกผิดจึงไปพูดกับค่างว่าตนเป็นสัตว์ที่ขโมยไปโปรดอย่าถือสาเลยค่างก็ได้ให้อภัย นับจากนั้นมาก็มีสัตว์ตัวอื่นมาเล่นกับลิง นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า การโกหกจะทำให้เกิดทุกข์

ณ ป่า แห่งหนึ่ง – the ณ is a written preposition kinda like ‘at’ and you might translate this like “Once upon a time” even though literally it’d be like ‘at a forest’
เต่าเป็นสัตว์ที่มีนิสัยซื่อสัตย์ – นิสัย remember this? habit, manners,etc …here the turtle is an honest; loyal; all around good guy (animal)

เมื่่อเกิดอะไรขึ้น any time anything happens…

ก็จะช่วยกันเสมอ they always help each other out

วันหนึ่งเต่ากำลังเดินเล่นอยู่ one day, the turtle was out for a stroll

ก็ไปเจอตะกร้าผลไม้ he came upon a basket of fruit

เต่าจึงนำไปถามหาเจ้าของ so the turtle went around trying to find the owner (of the basket)
หลายชั่วโมงผ่านไปค่างก็มารับตะกร้าผลไม้คืน for many hours until a langur (type of monkey) came to take back the basket

ค่างก็ชมเต่าว่าเป็นสัตว์ที่มีนิสัยซื่อสัตย์ the langurm praised the turtle for being such an honorable fellow
ลิงเห็นดังนั้นจึงนึกอิจฉาในความดีของเต่า the monkey saw this and felt jealous of the turtles good fortune (the praise from the langur)

จึงไปขโมยตะกร้าของค่างมาแล้วประกาศหาเจ้าของ so he (the monkey) went and stole the basket (of fruit) from the langur and then announced that he is looking for the owner

ค่างเห็นดังนั้นจึงรู้ว่าลิงขโมยไป however, the langur knew that the monkey stole the basket
จึงพูดว่าลิงขี้ขโมย ลิงก็พูดว่าไม่ได้ขโมยไปแต่เจออยู่ and said ‘you are a rotten thief’ and the monkey said ‘I’m not a thief, I just happened upon this here basket.”

นับจากนั้นมาก็ไม่มีสัตว์ตัวไหนไปเล่นกับลิงอีกเลย following this, nobody would hang out with the monkey anymore

ลิงจึงรู้สึกผิดจึงไปพูดกับค่างว่า The monkey felt pretty terrible about the whole mess and said the to the langur..
ตนเป็นสัตว์ที่ขโมยไปโปรดอย่าถือสาเลยค่างก็ได้ให้อภัย “I am a thief and I have wronged you, please can you forgive me?”

นับจากนั้นมาก็มีสัตว์ตัวอื่นมาเล่นกับลิง after that, all the animals came back to play with the monkey yay (warm feeling)

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า การโกหกจะทำให้เกิดทุกข์ this นิทาน (fable, tale) teaches us that stealing causes suffering

Moral of the story – If yer gonna steal fruit, you might as well eat it

เจ้าของ = owner ; proprietor ; proprietress
อิจฉา = envy ; be envious ; be jealous
ขี้ขโมย = thieving bastard
ถือสา = mind ; care about ; take something to heart ; take offence
ให้อภัย = forgive ; excuse ; condone ; pardon
ทำให้เกิด = cause ; produce an effect
ทุกข์ = suffering
