ก็ชื่อคอลัมน์ว่าทางโค้งจิตวิทยาเพื่อวัยรุ่น “ให้โอกาสลูกทำในสิ่งที่ชอบ” เค้าบอกว่าวัยรุ่นสมัยนี้เป็นวัยที่ต้องการอิสระ ไม่ชอบกฏเกณฑ์และการเกลียด  เกลียดการถูกบังคับทุกรูปแบบ ฉะนั้นการจะเป็นผู้ปกครองหรือเป็นพ่อ แม่ ก็ต้องระมัดระวังการตั้งกฏเกณฑ์ในการบังคับให้เค้าทำสิ่งใดๆมากเกินไป จะต้องให้อิสระ ให้เค้าคิดเอง แล้วก็ตัดสินใจเอง โดยที่มีเรานะเป็นคนดูแลเค้าอย่างใกล้ชิดเพราะว่าถ้าเกิดพ่อแม่ชี้แนะแนวทางแล้วก็บังคับให้เค้าทำนะ มันจะทำให้เค้ากดดันแล้วก็ทำในสิ่งที่ผิดไปเลยก็จะทำให้ไม่ดี ฉะนั้นก็อย่าลืมว่ายุคสมัยมันเปลี่ยนไป อย่าทำอะไรที่พึงพอใจแต่พ่อแม่อย่างเดียวเท่านั้น ต้องให้เค้าได้ทำในสิ่งที่เค้ารัก เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้เค้าพัฒนาตัวเองมากขึ้น

Here is an amusing article I translated today.  I’ll post my translation below, but keep in mind that its not literal and I’ve changed the order in English around because it reads better.

The only name in the article is crossed out.  Learning to recognize names of people and places and then ignoring them is an important part of learning to read in a new language.

Vocab:

  • ปลัด เทศบาล (high ranking local offical)
  • กลิ่นเหม็น    foul odor (smell+bad smell)
  • ที่เกิดจาก that is coming from/caused by
  • กล่าวถึง (กล่าว = essentially newspeak for ’say’)

  • ที่เกิดขึ้น the scene (the place where ’something’ occurred)

นายธวัชชัย ทองมั่ง ปลัดเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต อ.เมือง จ.ภูเก็ต กล่าวถึง กรณีกลิ่นเหม็นที่เกิดจากบ่อฝังกลบขยะของเทศบาลนครภูเก็ต ส่งผลให้ชาวบ้านซึ่งตั้งบ้านเรือนอยู่บริเวณดังกล่าว โดยเฉพาะบริเวณหมู่บ้านสะพานหิน ได้รับความเดือดร้อนจากกลิ่นเหม็นของขยะจากบ่อฝังกลบดังกล่าว ว่า ได้รับทราบปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นดังกล่าวแล้ว ซึ่งสาเหตุที่เกิดปัญหาดังกล่าวขึ้นในระยะนี้ เนื่องจากได้มีการปรับปรุงบริเวณบ่อฝังกลบขยะ โดยมีการขุดดินเพื่อทำเป็นคันเสริมขอบบ่อให้มีความสูงเพื่อให้สามารถฝังกลบขยะได้เพิ่มมากขึ้น ประกอบกับมีฝนตกลงมา จึงทำให้ขยะที่ฝังกลบมาเป็นเวลานานและมีเป็นจำนวนมากส่งกลิ่นเหม็น 
“ ในส่วนของเทศบาลนครภูเก็ตไม่ได้นิ่งนอนใจกับปัญหาความเดือดร้อนที่เกิดขึ้น โดยได้พยายามหาแนวทางในการแก้ไข ด้วยการนำสารดับกลิ่นมาราดลงไปบนกองขยะดังกล่าว เพื่อลดความรุนแรงของกลิ่น ก็จะเชื่อว่าปัญหาเรื่องกลิ่นดังกล่าวคงทุเลาเบาบางลงไปได้ ” 
อย่างไรก็ตามนายธวัชชัย ยังกล่าวด้วยว่า เหตุที่ต้องมีการเสริมคันบ่อฝังกลบให้สูงขึ้น เนื่องจากเตาเผาซึ่งใช้งานอยู่ได้เพียงตัวเดียว ขณะนี้ได้หยุดดำเนินการเพื่อทำการซ่อมบำรุงเป็นเวลา 1 เดือน ทำให้ต้องนำขยะที่เคยเข้าสู่เตาเผาซึ่งมีเฉลี่ยวันละ 500 ตัน และเตาเผารับได้ 250 ตัน ต้องนำไปทำการฝังกลบแทน

Local residents, especially those in and around Moo Baan Sapaan Hin, are fed up with the foul odor emanating from the landfill in the Municipality of Phuket.
Mr. Tawatchai Tongmang (ธวัชชัย ทองมั่ง ), the Permanent Secretary of Phuket responded to complaints ensuring locals that the government is aware of the problem and is working to solve it.
He stated that the landfill is currently being expanded to increase capacity. This has left some of the garbage exposed while the walls of the landfill are being raised. Recent rain has exhasberated the problem, creating a considerable stench due to the wet garbage.
“The Municipality is not taking the seriousousness of this problem lightly. We are working on ways of solving this issue, such as with deodarants that should reduce the stench to a more moderate level.”
The landfill is being expanded as the amount of daily waste being produced in Phuket has increased lately due to Phuket’s sole incinerator being out of service for approximately 1 month for repairs. Normally, the incinerator can handle 250 tons per day. This is half of what Phuekt produces each day so the excess garbage is being put in the landfill for the time being.

Break into the News – One Whitey Story at a Time February 19, 2009

You don’t need to be advanced to start reading the news or literature or whatever. You need a bit of motivation and resources. Today I’m just gonna do the headline and image caption, but you should get the idea and if somebody really wants I’ll do the whole article.

As always, on the first scan, skip words you don’t know. Sound them out loud (or silently you are in a place where you don’t want to look silly) and take a crack at guessing the meaning if you can, but if not…keep reading.

So lets break this down into chunks easier to handle. First the headline:

อาละวาด wild; violent (I like this word. When I first encountered it …it was always associated with kids..gangs and what not. Its in the news pretty often.)

I’ll break down this short article in the following post.  First, I wanna talk about killing.

การุณฆาต

เจ้าหน้าที่สิ่งแวดล้อมของออสเตรเลีย เปิดเผยว่า ลูกวาฬหลังค่อมที่พลัดหลงฝูงและกำลังหิวโหย ซึ่งพยายามที่จะดูดนมจากเรือยอชท์ ซึ่งคิดว่าเป็นแม่ของมันในน่านน้ำทางตอนเหนือของซิดนีย์ จะถูกทำให้ตายอย่างสงบ โดยบรรดาสัตวแพทย์และนักวิจัยทางทะเล ซึ่งใช้เวลาในช่วงบ่ายของวันพฤหัสบดี ตรวจสอบลูกวาฬที่น่าสงสาร ตัวนี้แล้ว พบว่า มันอยู่ในอาการแย่มาก ซึ่งไม่น่าจะมีชีวิตรอดผ่านคืนนี้ไปได้ เนื่องจากลูกวาฬได้รับบาดเจ็บ อาการเลวร้ายกว่าที่เจ้าหน้าที่คิดไว้มาก

การุณฆาต

You know how in English someone who has a bit of previous knowledge can often break up a word into pieces to get an idea of what it might mean?  Well, it should come as no surpise that Thai is the same way.  Look at the beginning of การุณฆาต and you find การุณ which you may have come across as การุณา which phrase books label as meaning ‘please.’   Anyways, การุณ actually means something along the lines of ‘kindness’  so ฆารุณฆาต means ‘kind death’ or mercy killing (think euthanasia).

The second part of the word ฆาต is one of the few words that uses the letter “ฆ” so let’s try and remember it.  ฆาต usually means death and there are a few other words that we can come up with with the same or similar letter combo.

Do you read the news everyday?  At least the headlines that pop up on whatever sites you happen to frequent?  Well, why don’t you read them in Thai?

I scan headlines in Japanese and Thai nearly everyday and I read any articles that sound interesting.  You don’t need to be particularly skilled in a language to start reading the news.  You may be thinking I’m crazy, and while I can’t really argue with that, I’m actually quite serious.

What is a headline anyways?  Its a short, catchy, grammatically simple phrase or sentence thats meant to lure us into reading further.  Following the headline is the lead which tells us the who-what-where-why-when-how-izms of the story.  The language used is considerably more finite than that say of literature or even magazines so in a very short time we can begin flying through those handful of sentences.

Tips to Remember

  • We only want the main idea – if you can grasp it while not knowing every word and not having to look any up – you are golden!
  • Learn the words/abbreviations for places and be able to recognize which words are just names of people and places you’ve never heard of and ignore them.
  • Stick to the same type of news for a while (I prefer crime and disasters)
  • Do it everyday – Start easy – 2-5 minutes (it quickly becomes easier and more interesting as you can work out the story very quickly and then reread to get any extra details)
  • Don’t look everything up!  You aren’t likely to remember it all anyways so its just a waste of energy.  You will begin to see the same words again and again and you will remember them and how they are used because of the repetitiveness found in the news.

And if this still sounds too daunting than there is another equally effective way – read an article in English first, than look it up in the language(s) you are learning and read it there.  It isn’t likely to be a translation, but the story is the same so its just a matter of writing.  You can still greatly benefit from this method as well.  Do whatever works, or rather whatever seems less like work as in the end it comes down to you and what you do on your own time.  I don’t have time to teach you everything (nor do I know enough myself!) and you are a fool if you think any school or textbook can give you everything you need.

All I can do is save you some time by eliminating as many of the mistakes I made as possible from your journey into fluency.  Each language you learn makes it easier because you become aware of all the things you did wrong the last time.
