What are you doing in Thailand?

Introduction

Once you’ve been in Thailand for a while, someone is eventually going to ask you what you are doing here. I’ve been in and out of Thailand since 2003 and I still get this question all of the time. This dialogue is meant to show the flow of how that type of conversation might go. It’s very loosely based on what my situation was in the early years in Thailand and like all the dialogues in this course, I’ve had talks very similar to these many hundreds of times over the years and so will you.

I can’t prepare you for exactly how every Thai person is going to talk, but what I can do is make sure you know all the core sentence patterns that Thai people use every single day and then show you these patterns in real conversations which are based on what Thai people actually say to each other rather than how they tell you to talk.

First, try listening to the full audio once or twice using the player above and just listen out for things that you do know. Don’t worry about anything you can’t catch or understand. Then gradually go through each line in Thai and see how much more you can figure out with the text.

Thai: มาถึงนานยัง	Thai: So when did you get here?
Farang: ลงเครื่องที่กรุงเทพเมื่ออาทิตย์ที่แล้ว อยู่โน่น สักพัก แล้วก็ขึ้นมาเชียงใหม่	Farang: I flew into Bkk a week ago and I hung out there for a bit before coming to CM.
Thai: ฝรั่งจะอยู่นี่เทอมเดียวใช่ป่ะ	Thai: And you are going to be here for 1 semester right?
Farang: ไม่อ่ะ ไอจะอยู่ปีนึงเลย	Farang: Actually, I’m here for a full year.
Thai: จริงดิ นี่มาไทยครั้งแรกเลยป่ะเนี่ย	Thai: Ah cool. So is this your first time to Thailand?
Farang: ไม่ๆ เคยมาเที่ยวไทยสองสามปีที่ผ่านมา	Farang: No, I came a couple of years ago on holiday.
Thai: แต่ยังไม่เคยอยู่จริงๆ ใช่ไหม	Thai: So you’ve never lived here?
Farang: ช่าย (* ใช่ )	Farang: Nope.
Thai: พูดไทยเก่งจังทั้งๆที่ไม่เคยอยู่นี่มาก่อน	Thai: You speak Thai pretty well for someone who has never lived in Thailand.
Farang: ตอนอยู่ เมกา เรียนภาษาไทยที่มหาลัยแล้วก็มีเพื่อนคนไทยด้วย	Farang: I studied at university in the US and have some Thai friends there.
Thai: แล้วตอนนี้อยู่ปีอะไรละ	Thai: So what year are you in now?
Farang: ปีสามแล้ว	Farang: This is my 3rd year.
Thai: เมเจอร์ไรหรอ	Thai: And your major?
Farang: ไทยศึกษา	Farang: Thai Studies.
Thai: อ่าวหรอ นึกว่าอยู่เมเจอร์ภาษาไทยซะอีก	Thai: Oh, I thought you might be majoring in Thai language.
Farang: อยากอยู่นะ แต่เขาไม่ให้เลือกน่ะ	Farang: I wanted to, but they didn’t have that as a choice.
Thai: ไม่เป็นไร อยู่นี่แล้วก็จะได้ฝึกเยอะๆ	Thai: Well, now that you are here, you can practice a lot!
Farang: ก็ว่าอย่างงั้นแหละ	Farang: That’s what I’m hoping for.
