This is an excerpt from the Thai translation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid which is called ไดอารี่ของเด็กไม่เอาถ่าน. I can’t stress enough how great a tool this is for diving into reading in a new language. I’ve read the series in Japanese, Korean, Thai and I’m currently struggling through the Taiwanese version. Remember that you aren’t going to understand everything. But there are a number of super useful language bits that are great to pick up in any language. It only helps that the book is actually pretty funny as well.

I would try to read through it before going below to check out the vocab/breakdown. Always give things a once over before you give up thinking it is too hard for you. The only way to get better is to constantly challenge yourself. Just spend less time on boring stuff focus more on the fun stuff.

I have long wanted to do a guide for the entire book, but I think it would be too time consuming and not very lucrative. It would however, be a pretty awesome learning tool.

As some of you already know, when I do private lessons, as soon as you can read the alphabet we start on this book. The real language in this book is far better than any textbook or do-it-yourself book that I have come across.

Really Useful Stuff

เป็นอะไรกันหมด

เป็นอะไรกัน can mean “what’s with them” as well as “what is their relationship/connection”
The use of หมด implies that it is ‘all’ of them. In this case, girls.

ประถม or Prathom refers to the first 6 years of education. Grades 1-6 are ป. 1 – ป. 6.
The ป. is an abbreviation of ประถม and is read as ปอ.

ไม่เห็นจะยุ่งยากขนาดนี้เลย

~ขนาดนี้ is used to clarify the extent of something
Here are a few examples I pulled from Google.

มั้ย is the colloquial pronunciation of ไหม. It is also usually typed this way in a lot of informal online communication.

สงสัยว่า…. – I wonder if/about/that ….
Some fun Googly examples –

1. สงสัยว่าถ้าภรรยาท้อง สามีจะเอาผ้าไปซักที่ไหนคะ?
(I’m) wondering if a wife is pregnant, where can the husband wash his clothes?

2. สงสัยว่าปลวกอาจจะขึ้นบ้านลิง
Wondering if termites might have infested the monkey house.

3. ถ้าสงสัยว่าเพื่อนจะเป็นเกย์ ถามเขาตรงๆเขาจะโกรธไหม?
If you are wondering if your friend is gay and you ask him straight up, is he going to be pissed?

4. นางเอกหนังอวตาร เขาเอาต้นแบบมาจากใคร สงสัยว่าเป็น แอ็งเจลิน่า โจลี่ใช่หรือไม่

สนิดกับ – To be สนิดกับ someone means you are close to them.
It is also used to express the closing of something tightly such as doors or faucets. So a door that was ปิดไม่สนิด would not be closed all of the way.

เข้ากัน – This is similar to the above expression. If 2 things เข้ากัน it means they ‘go well together.’
So in the case of people it means they get along well or are good for each other.
